REFLECTIVE WRITING ON MY SINGING PROGRESS AND ASSESSMENT.
At the beginning of the semester when I discovered we were going to have singing lessons I was extremely nervous and worried about what was going to happen as I have never properly participated within singing activities nor had I performed in front of an audience on my own before. To learn that the assessment would be based on a solo performance, my nerves and dread grew greater and greater. After my first lesson with Vic,, our teacher, I felt a lot more comfortable and confident with singing as a group and opening up my vocal chords. We took part in an activity where we placed socks under our armpits and sung whilst opening our vocals allowing vibrations to occur through our backs., We then partnered up and allowed our partner to hear the vibration from our vocals, I said the words ‘ahhh’ as my partner could feel the vibrations coming through on my back, we then swapped and I felt my partners vibrations through her back, if she was not quite opening her back enough I helped her adjust her body posture. This activity was extremely helpful as it allowed me to understand how posture and opening your back allows your vocal range to expand and enables you to project a lot more than if your back was closed up.
We also did a group singing activity singing the song ‘Lean On Me’, this was extremely fun and helpful as it allowed us to work with harmonies and try to keep within our own group and not alter our voices to sound like a different tone or harmony. I was in the majority group which was singing the lower harmonies of the song, it was sometimes difficult to not adjust to sing a higher or middle range as sometimes their vocals over powered the song, but we all went off into our separate groups and focused to stay on the same level as each other and concentrate on keeping a tight group. Another singing activity that the class took part in was singing/rapping to Eminen’s extremely popular song ‘Lose Yourself’ this allowed us to focus specifically on the way we pronounce certain words and our articulations when singing and rapping. It also enabled us to attempt to clearly pronounce words properly whilst singing extremely fast, this was highly useful as it opened up different opportunities for us as singers and let us discover a talent of rapping that originally we may have never known about.
For our assessment, I decided to sing Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Smile’, I originally chose this song as it was short and I was intensely scared about performing my song. For our rehearsal when we performed to our class alone, I was nervous to the point of shaking, sweating and feeling really unwell. When it was my turn to perform, I looked above the audience and was really breathless due to panicking prior to my performance. I sung my song without moving and without making eye contact with the audience. I looked up and saw every girl in my class was in tears, the relief of it all made me cry too, it was very emotional, intense and intimate.
For the assessment I had a slightly larger audience and my nerves were just as intense, I decided to avoid being breathless I would drink plenty of water before performing and I also made the decision to try and move slightly more than I did in my rehearsal as this is a contributing factor to why my marks could be lower. I wanted to try and excel the best I could and show that I can sing with thin and thick vocals and sing soft and also sing hard too.
Overall, my development as a singer I feel was a good healthy progression and in the performance I hope that I showed a good range of my vocals and my abilities, if I didn’t I would be highly disappointed as I tried as hard as I could to show off my voice and make myself and Vic proud.
